String Instrument

Musical instruments are generally difficult to get into. To learn how to play the guitar, you need to learn the different ways of playing chords which has various positions of finger placements. To learn how to play drums, you need to be able to use all of your four limbs simultaneously yet at the same time, separately. The bass however, is quite a different instrument. While the guitar has chords and the drums have patterns, the bass has what we call notes. To play a note on the bass, you simply press a string down on a fret with your left hand and finger pluck it with your right. It’s very easy to start playing once you know the basics and learning those basics is not difficult at all.

In a song, the guitar player generally provides melody for the song along with the chord progression and a drummer gives it a rhythm and groove to the progression fitting the feel of the song. The bass player creates an atmosphere that surrounds the song and creates an aura for the song. Unlike the guitars or the drums, the bass is never ‘in your face’ in a song but it just gives the song a strong body which revolves around the rhythmic pattern. Bass players are mainly away from the spotlight as people do not understand the bass player’s role in a band. Bass playing is not as flashy as playing the guitar or the drums. The bass player is there to keep the music together and keep the groove going. The bass is a very different instrument and it needs to be understood well. Sometimes you may have to play just one note for the entire 3 minutes song but that one note will be so powerful that it makes the song huge.

If you’re looking out to play the bass, try one out to see if it really suits you and your personality. Most importantly, if you can connect with the instrument and speak what you want to, musically. Look for a cheap bass to start with, learn with it and have fun with it.
